ATIS VOICES

Synthesised Voices

The voices used in the ATIS Connect system are based on the Windows Speech API.

In this system, voices are packaged and sold either by Microsoft or independent suppliers so that they will work with the Windows Speech API

The required voice can be selected by going to the server control panel.

ATIS Connect uses one of several of the best voice packages as judged by a group of Air Traffic Controllers as being most "ethnically generic". However the user may elect to use an alternative package.

Speech Control

Pre-recorded Voices

If the user requires a localised accent, not available from the usual packaged voices ( USA and UK English) it is possible to switch to the concatenated speech voice, where a local person records all the words contained in the standard ATIS vocabulary.

Voice Segment Mode

In this mode the voice segments are either generated by the synthesised voice engine, or recorded by a human. The speech segments are played in sequence. This results in a message which is optimal for intelligibility, but does not have the prosody** of natural speech.

Male Voice ATIS

Female Voice ATIS

Synthesised Sentence Mode

In this mode the complete ATIS message is generated by the synthesised voice engine. The whole ATIS is contained in a single voice file. This results in a message which is not optimal for intelligibility, but does have most of the elements of the prosody** of natural speech. Some customers prefer this mode.

** Prosody refers to patterns of word spacing, stress and and intonation in natural speech
